CHARACTER FACTS--
» Name: Cu Chulainn (Lancer)
(While Cu Chulainn is his real name, he will only tell that to people he has come to trust, introducing himself to everyone else by his class title, Lancer. I'm not sure what name should be used as his tag to avoid confusion.)

» Canon: Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works Route

» Reference: http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Lancer_%28Fate/stay_night%29
(Please note that while the article has information about all his appearances in the Fate Universe, I'm pulling him from Unlimited Blade Works Route.)

» Canon Point:  Unlimited Blade Works Route, Day 15-After Image: End of a Hero. (The end of this chapter after he sets the Einzbern castle on fire and fades.)

» Gender: Male

» Age: ~30/Ageless
(His age is never stated in canon, but it's said that he died around age 30 in his legend and that seems to fit how he looks and acts. However, it should be pointed out that as a heroic spirit summoned back into the world by magic, age is kind of an irrelevant thing.)

CHARACTER INTERPRETATION--
» Appearance: Despite being a spirit called back into the world via magic, Lancer generally looks like a normal human male. He is around 6 feet tall and 155 pounds (185cm/70kg). He is well built from years of fighting, but his build is lean as he is a fighter who relies more on speed and agility than strength. His hair is dark blue--short and spiky on the top and sides, but long in the back. It goes to about mid-back, and he keeps it pulled into a ponytail with a wide gold clasp. He has red eyes with slightly cat-like pupils. The pupils become much more cat-like when he is emotional, shrinking down to mere slits when he is enraged or completely engrossed in battle.

Lancer always wears a pair of long, simple silver earrings. His battle outfit consists of a pair of blue body tights with silver markings and sliver armored shoulder pads. The outfit is tight for maximum mobility in battle and is actually a reference back to the woad paint that Celtic warriors of his day often wore.

(Here is a reference image for his outfit: http://outskirtsbattledome.wikispaces.com/file/view/Lancer.png This outfit is the same as the blue one he is wearing on the wiki page I linked above, though once he gets some money he will probably buy as close a copy as he can of the casual outfit that is also on that page--the loud Hawaiian shirt, black pants, and brown shoes--to wear instead.)

» Suitability: N/A

» Orientation: Heterosexual. While his sexuality is never directly explored in any of the routes like some of the other characters, Lancer very definitely likes the ladies. He constantly flirts with the female cast even when it's not really appropriate for the situation and it doesn't matter if that female is an ally or an enemy.  He will hit on both just the same.  This is very obviously shown in how he treats Rin during the route.  Even though the first time they met he was focused on killing her, when he meets up with her the second time with the intention of being her ally instead of her enemy, he spends a good deal of the time complimenting and hitting on her despite the fact that they have just come from burying a young girl whose heart they watched get ripped out during a fight.  Not exactly the appropriate time to be hitting on someone.  In fact, not even when it's Lancer's own death that is looming, does he stop flirting with Rin.  At the end of his part in the route once he has set her off to help her friends, he can't help but hit on her one more time, making his last words a flirt.

During this route, Rin is the woman he spends the most time around, so she is the one who is almost constantly on the receiving end of his advances.  Lancer flirts with her so much, it makes Shirou worried enough to force Lancer to agree to back off before giving consent to their alliance.  As one may guess, though, that doesn't stop Lancer for long, and he is back to flirting with her later that night.  Even when Rin turns to playfully hitting him to get him to back off, he just smiles and takes it because she reminds him of just the kind of women he likes getting into trouble with.

In addition to his constant flirting in the route, in his legend Cu Chulainn was a well known ladies man and married early in life, not that that stopped him from bedding any woman he took an interest in.

» Personality:

(Note from the Mun:  I realize that this game doesn't allow different media versions of a character mixing.  Fate servants present a bit of a problem because they are heroes from ancient times who are very aware of who they are and will mention/refer to their legends which could potentially lead to what could be considered a myth version mixing with an anime version.  Of course, in Fate many legends have been changed somewhat--like King Arthur being female instead of male.  While Cu Chulainn's legend hasn't been changed much, any references I make to the legend will be the Fate version of the legend.  If this is still too much version mixing for the game, please let me know so I can revise/remove references.  I'm not sure where the line would be drawn on something like this or if it actually is a problem considering the nature of the anime.)

When it comes down to it, Lancer is a man of extremes.  He's a laid back joker who makes some wonder if he can take anything seriously.  He's a flirt to the point he often makes others uncomfortable, and he's an unyielding beast in battle to the extreme that others wonder if he is a man at all.  Of course, first as the hero Cu Chulainn and later as the servant Lancer, he has never cared what others think.  He has always done things the way he wants to do them, when he wants to do them, and by his own honor code.

Those who are lucky enough not to meet Lancer for the first time on the field of battle often walk away with the impression that he takes nothing seriously--even life or death situations are a joke to him.  One strong example of this comes when he allies with Rin and Shirou for the first time.  Despite the fact that they have just come from a battle where a young girl had her heart ripped from her chest in front of them, Lancer meets them with a smile and jokes that range from making fun of one of the enemy servants, to laughingly pointing out the true nature of Rin and Shirou's relationship.

Something that often adds to people's belief that Lancer can't be serious is that he flirts with females--ally an enemy--just as much as he jokes with them.  Again, this often happens in situations where it would be considered highly inappropriate.  During that same scene, a good many of his lines that aren't jokes are Lancer hitting on Rin.  His constant jokes and hitting on her actually make Shirou so nervous and uneasy that he makes Lancer agree to leave Rin alone before he will consent to them being allies.  Lancer does agree, but considering how quickly he starts flirting with Rin again, it's obvious he doesn't take Shirou's unease seriously.  This is because, despite his laid back and joking nature, Lancer is still a knight and has a code of honor that he follows.  He knows he won't do anything to hurt Rin if for no other reason than she is someone who reminds him very much of his teacher during his first life.  One if his very first flirts describes her as beautiful, stubborn and courageous--just the kind of traits he would want in a female master--namely because they are the main traits of the women he tended to get into trouble with during his first life.

In the end, he doesn't care what Shirou believes because Lancer knows he won't hurt her and it's exactly this 'I don't care what you think' attitude that allows people to form and then hold onto their incorrect views on how serious he is.  Only a few ever really get a chance to see him at his most serious and a lot of those don't survive the experience.  This is something Shirou learns first hand.

The first time Shirou actually meets Lancer, the servant is fighting against Rin's servant, Archer.  Since Shirou isn't a part of the war at this time, when Lancer realizes he has seen them, his attention turns from fighting Archer to dealing with Shirou, who by the rules of the war, cannot be allowed to live after witnessing part of it.  He ruthlessly hunts Shirou until he corners the boy in a hallway at the school and then kills him even after admitting that while it's a pretty bad thing to have to do, rules are rules.  Lancer seems annoyed when he finds Shirou alive later, but again focuses on upholding the rules of the war, and Shirou only manages to survive this time because he summons Saber to defend him.

To see Lancer at his most serious, though, he has to be seen in battle against another servant and the one who he fights the most seriously during the route is Archer.  It is during their first battle that Rin points out just how beast-like Lancer is in battle.  First of all, the joking and flirting that is usually so much a part of his character is no where to be found aside from one fairly weak joke made when he is alone with Rin before Archer materializes to join the fight.  Throughout the fight, Rin repeatedly mentions how strong Lancer's murderous intent is and it only gets stronger as the fight goes on to the extent that at one point she says it's so intense it makes her forget to breath and even seems to make the air around them freeze.  She also mentions how his stare is more like that of an animal than a human going so far as to compare him a panther.  His grin gives her the same feeling as his stare and both of those things match the bestial aura he's been radiating ever since she first ran into him.  Rin isn't the only one to notice these things as Archer also comments on his beast-like agility during the battle.

Shortly after that fight, Archer betrays Rin and Lancer's interest in fighting him quickly becomes less about curiosity and more about making him pay for hurting her after the betrayal.  This shows a different kind of seriousness in Lancer, and while it's something he doesn't admit to Rin, his willingness to spare Archer's life just long enough for him to crawl back and apologize to her pretty clearly shows how he feels about what the other servant has done.  This is no longer the bestial seriousness he shows in battle, but the seriousness of a man of honor who cannot stand seeing someone he respects treated in such a way.

Rin never realizes just how big a thing Lancer's agreement with her request to let Archer live is.  Each time Lancer fights it is pointed out how serious he takes the fights.  In a war where the prize is any wish the winner desires, Lancer's only wish is the chance to fight good fights with those as strong as he is.  That means he usually doesn't hold back during battle.  As he is fighting Archer for the second time, though, Lancer realizes he is holding back to a degree just because Rin has asked him to.  It's only when Archer speaks of Lancer's true identity and starts to insult his very pride as a warrior that Lancer forgets his promise and goes all out against Archer.

If it is one thing he cannot stand, it's being called a dog.  Lancer might have acted as a guard to replace the hound his killed during his first life, but he is no one's pet in this one and is very sensitive to any joke or insult that refers to him as such.  This is because he feels not only an insult to his history, but also to him as a warrior since he took on the role of guard with pride to repay a debt.

And it is Lancer's pride as a warrior that eventually leads to his death.  During the whole war, his master has hidden in the shadows and forced him to back away from fights or fight them not at full strength.  Because his master holds his command seals, Lancer has been forced to go along with these tactics, only managing to find some joy when his master orders him to watch out for Rin.  This joy is short lived when his master later orders Lancer to kill the now captive and helpless Rin because he's done using her as a pawn.  Not only does Lancer genuinely like Rin at this point, but his pride has had enough of his master's underhanded tactics.  He tells his master that he will have to use a command spell to make him take such an dishonorable action.  His master does this, only he changes the order and forces Lancer to kill himself instead because his master no longer needs him either.  This is an action Lancer has no choice but to take because of the command spell.

However, Lancer's pride as a hero gives him the chance to see to it his master doesn't get away with this as he uses it to gather the last of his strength and kill his master.  He then frees Rin.  When Rin offers to make him her servant and heal him, Lancer proves once last time that despite being a laid back joker, he knows how to be serious.  He knows that the wound caused by his spear can't be healed even by a mage as powerful as Rin, so he passes on her offer sending her off to help the ones he knows she really cares about with a smile and one last flirt on his lips.

He can't have anyone thinking him too serious after all...

First Person Sample:  Prompt 2--

(Video Network Post)

[As the video feed turns on, viewers are treated to the image of a handsome man with vaguely cat-like red eyes and blue hair sitting on a bench in a park.  He rubs his hands together, blowing on them to warm them before starting to speak.]

You know, for what looks to be a tropical island, this place sure gets cold.

[He pauses for a moment.  It seems like something going on in front of him has caught his attention, and it's only once whatever is going on finishes that he starts speaking again.]

Look, I'm not going to waste your time.  I'm sure you guys are plenty used to seeing "I'm new" transmissions on this thing.  This really ain't going to be all that different.

I'm looking for a job of some kind.  Doesn't have to be anything fancy.  I'm not a fancy guy.  I'm pretty good at a lot of things, though.  Would be a kick ass bodyguard.

[He laughs, eyes twinkling.]

And I know all kinds of ways to guard a body if you catch my drift, though I usually don't charge for that particular kind of guarding.

So, drop me a line if you've got a job you wanna throw at me.  I don't bite, I promise.

Well...I don't bite unless you ask, that is...

[Lancer winks at the camera with a smirk and ends the recording.]

3rd Person Sample:  Prompt 1--

Mmm...now that is a nice feeling to wake up to.  It reminds him of home actually.  His real home.  Not one of the many places he'd found a warm bed and body to enjoy during his first life, but the home that held his wife.  Even with all ladies he'd been with over time, only she had ever figured out how to make him feel that mix of fulfilled satisfaction and relaxed energy that he's feeling right now.  Her reasons hadn't been purely selfless, of course.  Hitting that right feeling meant as soon as he woke up, he'd be ready for their traditional second round.  The warm, damp nest that the blankets provided to their tightly pressed bodies never hurt either.

That's why, despite feeling so good, when his hand flexes against his own stomach, Lancer frowns.  His arm shouldn't be resting against his own body right now.  It should be wrapped snugly around a soft waist or resting comfortably between a pair of even softer breasts.  His wife never got up before he woke.  Second round aside, he was so rarely home that she tended to spend as much time as possible wrapped in his embrace.

When she wasn't scolding the hell out of him or bouncing things off his head for being a fool that is.

He peeps one eye open to look around the room.  While he doesn't remember how he got there or why it looks like something of out some kind of fancy theater, he also doesn't care.  Now that he's a little more awake, he knows it couldn't have been his wife who was responsible for leaving him feeling so pleasantly fulfilled, so he's looking for whatever lady is responsible.  He has every intention of getting that second round not only so he can relieve the last of his own tensions, but also so he can show her his thanks for her attentions.  After all, Lancer never expected to have the chance for such pleasantries during the war...

The War.  Suddenly, he blots upright in bed, images of smoke, fire, and blood flashing across his vision.  His hand rises to his chest, and he's shocked when he pulls it back free of blood.

Gae Bolg's wounds are not so easily healed.  How...

"What the fuck..." the words slip out of his mouth unnoticed as he focuses his attention on the room he's sitting in.  Rich.  Lavish.  Those are just a few of the words that slip across his mind.   Certainly, not the kind of place a guy like him expects to end up.  Especially, not after lighting his own funeral pyre.

Lancer finally slides out of bed, the fact that he's naked not even registering, and makes his way over to the ornate mirror on the other side of the room.  Once there, he runs his fingers over the roughly two inch wide band that he's been feeling around his throat.  It's pretty all right, just like everything else in this room.  The outer rounded edges are blue and contrast well with the black in the middle, while at the same time highlighting the repeating blue triskeles that run through the blackness.

"You've gotta be kidding me," the words are more of a growl than proper speech.  Yes, it might be pretty, but the Hound of Culann knows a collar when he sees one, and he has no intention of wearing one ever again, especially not one whose creator seems to have a very sick sense of humor.

"So help me if I find even one damn crow around here..." Lancer slides his fingers under the edges of the collar in an attempt to pull it off.  The collar doesn't loosen.  Despite the fact his fingers hurt from the force he's pulling on it with, the collar doesn't budge at all.

The growl from before returns, and he slams his fist down onto the top of the dresser where the mirror is sitting, then pulls his hand back with a curse at the pain the shoots through it.  The dresser should be in shambles from a blow like that.  Instead, its top isn't even scratched and it's his hand that is hurting.

Rage flares inside of him and it takes a concentrated effort for Lancer to push the feeling down and away.  It is habit he learned early on in life, though it only worked sometimes back then...

...Sometimes the ríastrad couldn't be denied...

Thankfully, this isn't one of those times.  Being called into the Lancer class for the war means he can't actually berserk...not really anyway, but caging his feelings back behind a more positive emotion is something he's so used to that he does it automatically when he's not in battle.  Having a sneaky, traitorous, cowardly master like that damned priest had turned out to be had only meant more opportunities to practice.

Lancer sighs and runs a hand through his hair, combing the snarls out of the longer parts.  It's a silly thing, but it helps calm the anger still boiling in his veins, and he needs to be calm now.  He needs to figure out why none of his abilities as a servant are active.

He reaches out and quickly sketches a rune into the air.  Nothing happens.  Not that he had expected it to.  If his physical abilities like strength and resistance are gone, his magic would logically be too.

When looking around the room again yields no more answers than it had before, Lancer crosses back to the bed and picks up his clothing from where it's laying folded neatly on a chair.  It takes him only moments to pull on his familiar battle gear and pull his hair back, careful not to catch the strands on his earrings.  His hand then closes around the only other familiar thing in the room--his spear.  While Gae Bolg may have been as stripped of any special ability as he has been--he can feel that just as soon as he touches it--Lancer is glad to have the familiar weight in his hand as he turns to leave the room.  If there are no more answers to be found here, then there is no reason for him to stay...

Though, he still wouldn't mind finding whatever kind lady had been responsible for his condition upon waking and thanking her.  Some gifts just demand repayment.
